Gift Wisely

Know The Gift Tax Rules. Be wise.

If, as the boss, you pop into Waitrose and buy five £25 bottles of rum to give to each of your employees, be sure of the reasons (for tax purposes). If you take them into the office and say “Ladies and Gents – we’re hitting targets so here’s a bottle of rum for each of you” – that would be a reward for services and so would be FULLY taxable. However, if you say “It’s a wonderful time to be alive. I’m in a sunny mood, so here’s a bottle of rum for each of you!” – the gift would be a trivial benefit.

(I love rum)
